Britain’s Most Controversial Spirit Board?
Poundland’s Ouija-Style £1 Halloween Board
In 2020, Poundland started selling a £1 spirit board as part of its Halloween range. It caused quite a stir in the press, and was eventually pulled from sale – when it was nearly sold out anyway!
But what exactly was all the fuss about?
In this video, I take a look at the infamous Creepy Town Spirit Board, starting with the controversy surrounding its brief appearance in Poundland and the meltdown in the press.
Watch the video below, or check it out – and subscribe! – on YouTube:
I then dig into the longer history of spirit boards and Ouija boards, the rise of Spiritualism, why spirit boards became particularly popular during and after the First World War, and the good old days when Ouija boards outsold Monopoly – until Hollywood films came along and wrecked its reputation forever.
If that wasn’t enough, I have a like-new still sealed copy of the spirit board in question, which I open and unleash for the first time live on camera. Will it move? Will I contact the other side? Does it even work with just one person?

Oh, and I also have a taste of another strange piece of Ouija merchandise: Mystifying Mints, all the way from Boston. Spoiler: very minty! And very tasty….
So, welcome to my first – and hopefully last – spirit board unboxing.
Until next time… nos da!
