Halloween Ghost Rider: Haunted Crossroads, Murder Road & Jack-o’-Lantern
Who is the mysterious Ghost Rider haunting a lonely Welsh road — and why does he appear when Halloween jack-o’-lanterns flicker in the darkness?
And what dark connection links this eerie horseman to an ancient crossroads, a deadly old murder, and the chilling folklore of Nos Calan Gaeaf, the Welsh Halloween?
Could the Devil himself be riding those haunted lanes when the veil between worlds grows thin? Meanwhile, what about the ghost cat? Yes, ghost cat!
In this episode of the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast, author and folklorist Mark Rees uncovers one of the most unnerving ghost stories in Welsh tradition.
Set against the backdrop of rural Wales, it’s a tale steeped in autumn mist, flickering lights, and a spectral rider whose hooves are not quite human…
What you’ll hear in this episode:
- The terrifying legend of the Ghost Rider who stalks a lonely Welsh road
- The folklore of jack-o’-lanterns (jac-y-lantern), and how ancient traditions shaped modern Halloween
- Why haunted crossroads are feared as places where spirits gather
- A glimpse into the darker side of Halloween folklore in Wales
- Hints of an old murder that gave the road its sinister name

The darker side of Halloween folklore in Wales
Halloween, or Nos Calan Gaeaf, has long been one of the most important nights in the Welsh folklore calendar.
As autumn gave way to winter, people believed that spirits could cross into our world, wandering the countryside and causing mischief — or worse.
To keep these ghosts at bay, the Welsh carved jack-o’-lanterns (jac-y-lanterns), not from pumpkins but from swedes or turnips, their flickering lights warding off the darkness.
It was a night filled with strange rituals, ghostly warnings, and tales like the one in this episode — where spectral horsemen and haunted lanes take centre stage.
If you’ve ever wondered where our modern Halloween traditions come from, or why so many spooky Welsh legends focus on crossroads and lone travellers, this episode is the perfect place to begin your journey.
