Spirits That Move Churches: Welsh Legends of Vanishing Buildings
Across Wales, there are legends of churches that refused to stay where they were built, with some suggesting they were removed by supernatural agency…
In episode 165 of the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast, Mark Rees explores some of these curious cases, drawn from traditions across west and mid-Wales, including Carmarthenshire, Radnorshire (now Powys), and Ceredigion.
Spooky accounts include:
🦇 Llanddeusant (Carmarthenshire): Builders would lay stones during the day, only to return in the morning and find them gone. The work would then appear somewhere else in the parish, as if something in the night had quietly decided the church should stand elsewhere.
🦇 Llanbister (Radnorshire, now Powys): Tradition claims that everything built during the day was undone overnight, again and again. What makes this account stand out is a small but intriguing detail in the record – rent continued to be paid for the original intended site, lending weight to the idea that the “missing church” was still, in some sense, meant to be there.
🦇 Llangan (Carmarthenshire): Here, the story takes a more unsettling turn. Not only were the stones reportedly moved in the night, but a voice was heard in the darkness, speaking and naming the exact place where the church should stand.

And these are just a few examples. Similar stories appear in other parts of Wales too, all sharing the same strange pattern – building work completed by day, undone or relocated by night, and always an unseen force behind it.
Some of these tales may preserve memories of lost or rebuilt churches. Others might reflect older tensions over sacred land, ownership, or belief. Or perhaps they sit somewhere in between history and something harder to define.
What was really going on in these places? And why does this story keep appearing in different corners of Wales?
