Aberystwyth Ghost Stories & Abertoir Horror Festival at Halloween

Ahead of Halloween (Nos Calan Gaeaf), I paid a rainy October visit to Aberystwyth, and recorded a weird and wonderful vlog that combines Welsh ghost stories, spooky decor and a chat about the world’s finest horror movie festival.

More specifically, there are tales about an Aberystwyth corpse candle (canwyll corff) spotted in a seaside house, the Ceredigion Spring-Heeled Jack (yes, the old Victorian bogeyman was seemingly haunting Aber) and caught with my friend Nia Edwards-Behi at a look around the National Library of Wales – Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru.

Watch the Aberystwyth Ghost Stories video below, and check out the YouTube channel for more:

Nia is the co-director of wonderfully named Abertoir Horror Festival, which has now been running for more than 20 years.

We talk about Abertoir’s plans for 2026 (it’s good news for Hammer fans!), its Welsh connections (Jimmy Sangster, anyone? Ray Milland?) and what’s coming next… (hint: it involves Dracula).

So that’s a little Welsh folklore, a dash of horror, a big dollop of ghost stories, and the usual wander around to see what we can find…

Until next time, nos da!
