Halloween at Pennard Castle: Wales’s ‘Most Haunted’ Ruins? 👻🏰
What happens when you spend Halloween night at one of Wales’ most haunted ruins?
On Nos Calan Gaeaf — the Welsh Halloween, when the veil between worlds is thinnest — shadowy figures and death omens are said to roam the Gower Peninsula.
Among the haunted sites of Wales, Pennard Castle stands out: ruins perched above the sands, steeped in folklore, and said to be cursed by the terrifying Gwrach y Rhibyn, a death omen that shares similarities with the Irish banshee.

Ghosts, Curses & Folklore
Folklore claims that spending a night in the ruins could result in death — or worse.
One young man from Carmarthen who dared stay overnight reportedly survived an attack by the Gwrach, only to be driven to madness.
Centuries later, on Halloween night in 1998, Gregg and his friends hiked to the castle. They encountered shadowy forms and mysterious figures moving in the mist, a reminder that the castle’s reputation endures.
The castle’s dunes are said to have swallowed a lost settlement, adding to its chilling reputation, and visitors still report ghostly figures darting between doorways and windows, and hear eerie cries carried on the sea breeze.
While you might be more at risk from flying golf balls than spectres today, the ruins remain a place where only the brave will tread at night… especially on Halloween!

Why Pennard Castle still haunts the imagination
From witches to fairy folk (verry volk), Pennard Castle combines medieval history with supernatural tales. Its stories tie into broader Welsh Halloween traditions, where games, omens, and eerie rituals blurred the line between entertainment and the supernatural.
Visiting during Nos Calan Gaeaf highlights this centuries-old folklore.
So whether you’re fascinated by haunted Welsh castles, shadowy apparitions, or the old rituals of Halloween night, Pennard Castle offers a spine-tingling glimpse into a past.
